L3 Acquisition of Mandarin Sentence-Final Particles by English-Cantonese Bilinguals

26 January 2018, 15:00 – 17:00

Room 7, FAMES

Presenter: Yanyu Guo

This study of multilingualism investigates how English-Cantonese bilinguals acquire Sentence-Final Particles (SFPs) in their third language Mandarin, focusing on the roles of age, typological differences and learning experience in the course of language acquisition. In this seminar, I will present the findings and results of the pilot study conducted in Dec 2017. Ten Cantonese-English bilingual L3 learners of Mandarin, 6 intermediate English-speaking L2 learners of Mandarin, 3 advanced English-speaking L2 learners of Mandarin and 10 Mandarin native speakers participated in the experiment, which consisted of five different instruments (i.e. a cross-modal priming task, a sentence-picture matching task, a performance imitation task, a multiple-choice task and an acceptability judgement task).
