Strand 2: The Emergence of Standard English in Multilingual Britain

The Strand 2 workshop The Emergence of Standard English in Multilingual Britain, which took place in April 2017 at the University of Cambridge, served as a valuable opportunity for a diverse group of academics to present and exchange their latest research on the history of English from a multilingual perspective. The researchers sought to advance the discussion of the standardization of English beyond traditional approaches which tend to focus on more rigid categorizations of historical texts into assumed distinct languages (such as English, Latin and French), thereby embracing a more flexible view which recognizes the more disordered linguistic reality surrounding the historical development of languages in multilingual contexts.
