Chinese Null and Covert Arguments and Their Behaviours in L2 Chinese Grammars

17 November 2017, 15:00 – 17:00

Room 7, Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies

Speaker: Lilong Xu

Chinese is a pro-drop language which allows not only null subjects but also null objects in matrix sentences, embedded sentences and subordinate clauses. But in some cases, the seemingly absence of subjects and objects in Chinese are the result of ellipsis. This empirical study investigates the acquisition of covert arguments caused by ellipsis in L2 Chinese by adult L1 English speakers and studies the null arguments and their interpretations in adult English-speaking learners’ L2 Chinese grammars. The study aims to explain the divergence between non-native speakers and native speakers within the framework of Interface Hypothesis.
