As a PhD student working on Strand 2, Jiaye is investigating the under-researched history of teaching and learning Chinese as a foreign/second language within China during the period 1900-2010, in order to examine how the national language standard and national identity are promulgated within a multilingual society over time. Textbooks are the primary source, but the study will also draw on a wide range of other supplementary sources, including policy documents, statements of pedagogical theory, exam papers and personal testimonies through interviews.
