Profile:

Michael’s principal research interests are in foreign and second language education, with reference to secondary education. His publications include the following topics: language learner code-switching, the impact of study abroad on language proficiency, foreign language education policy, and the socio-educational experience of EAL students in England. He has co-directed, with Linda Fisher, a DfE-funded national study of the impact of government policy on language learning in schools (2006-2009), and was PI for the Bell Foundation-funded study: Language development and school achievement: opportunities and challenges in the education of EAL students (2016). Michael is co-series editor of Cambridge Education Research (CUP).
