Rory brings to the project a record of scholarship that has raised and enriched the profile of Ukraine as a multilingual and multi-ethnic cultural space bound together by projects of inter and intra-national solidarity. His primary research interest is the interplay of language, literature and national identity in Ukraine and the Black Sea region. He works in the Ukrainian, Russian, Turkish and Crimean Tatar languages. His broader interests include nationalism theory, human rights discourse, and problems of cultural memory. He directs the Ukrainian Studies programme, which has become the leading academic initiative of its kind in Europe, and currently serves as the Head of the Department of Slavonic Studies at the University of Cambridge.
